Wheeler elected as Chair of the Gymnastics Australia Athletes' Commission

Former elite Women’s Artistic Gymnast, Georgia Wheeler has been appointed chair of the Gymnastics Australia’s Athletes’ Commission, following the end of the term of Sam Offord who has now joined the Gymnastics Australia Board as an Appointed Director.

Now a lawyer and Senior Associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Wheeler began gymnastics at the age of 8 and finished her career at the age of 18 having represented Australia at the 2010 Pacific Rim Championships, 2010 Commonwealth Games and 2010 World Championships.

Hoping to empower High Performance athletes to speak up and own their journey in the sport, Wheeler believes that is important to have individuals who have 'lived' the experience of elite gymnastics, to successfully build and foster relationships with athletes and members of the broader community.

“As the Chair of this important Commission, I am hoping to work alongside all members of the gymnastics community to facilitate a culture and environment where athletes leave the sport with the same love and passion they started it with,” said Wheeler.

“Being appointed as the Chair of the Athlete Commission is an absolute honour and I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to contribute to the sport that gave me so much,” concluded Wheeler.

The Athletes' Commission is an athlete-led group set with the purpose to promote open and clear communication with current High Performance athletes in all Gymsports.

Announcing Wheeler’s appointment, Gymnastics Australia’s CEO, Kitty Chiller AM said it is important for athletes at all levels of the sport to feel and know that they have a voice that is genuinely listened to.

“Having someone with Georgia’s experience as both a gymnast and a highly skilled professional, will ensure that the Gymnastics Australia Board, and senior management benefit from the perspective and expertise of athletes in all deliberations and decision-making.

“I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of Sam Offord who has contributed significantly as both a member and Chair of the Commission for the last two terms,” Chiller said.

Nominations for the general members of the Athletes’ Commission have now closed and an announcement of successful candidates will be made in the coming weeks.
