NCC2017: Day 12 and Event wrap

Delta Gymnastics Brisbane secured back-to-back titles of Overall Champion Club for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) in Bendigo, to round out the final day of competition at the 2017 National Clubs Carnival.

In the final day of action at Bendigo Stadium, the Level 6 WAG athletes took to the floor for day 2 of their team competition.  Finishing second in the All-Around Team event, as well first in the Vault and Beam Team Finals, third in the Uneven Bars Team Final, and second in the Floor Team Final, the team from Delta Brisbane ensured that they secured the title of WAG Overall Champion Club for 2017, with a total score of 53 points.  However it was the team from Melbourne’s Waverley Gymnastics Centre that prevailed in the Level 6 WAG Team Competition.

As well as being crowned Level 6 All-Around Team Champions, the girls from Waverley also took out the Team Titles on Bars and Floor, as well as finishing second on Beam, and tying for the silver medal on Vault with the team from Gold Coast Gymnastics Club.  The girls from Gold Coast finished third All-Around in the Level 6 WAG Team competition.

Southern Canberra Gymnastics Club finished second in the race for Overall Champion Club with a score of 34 points, whilst in an incredibly tight race, Melbourne’s Mornington Youth Club (also known as MYC Gymnastics) was third on 33 points.

Delta Gymnastics Brisbane joins Sydney’s Manly Warringah Gymnastics Club in winning back-to-back titles in Bendigo in 2017, with the team from Manly Warringah being crowned the Overall Champion Club for Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) again in 2017, to add to their 2016 title.  Canberra City Gymnastics Club finished second Overall in the MAG competition, whilst the Gold Coast’s Super Performance Centre was third.

However across all of our other Gymsports, it was fantastic to see new Overall Champion Clubs crowned in 2017, demonstrating that Australia-wide events such as the National Clubs Carnival is encouraging clubs to expand their participation and Gymsport programs.

In Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG) Brisbane’s Premier Gymnastics Academy were crowned Overall Champion Club for 2017, improving on their third place Overall finish in 2016.  Newcomers to the RG National Clubs Carnival competition in 2017, Sydney’s Shire Gymnastics, placed second Overall, whilst 2015 and 2016 winners, Adelaide’s Holdfast Bay Rhythmic Gymnastics, were third.

Sydney’s Kachan School of Tumbling and Performance claimed the crown of Overall Champion Club for Trampoline Gymnastics in 2017, beating out 2015 Champions, Robertson Gymnastics Club, who finished second, and 2016 winners, Castle Hill RSL Youth Club, who finished third.  It was an impressive performance by the team from Kachan, who as their name would suggest, until recently predominantly focussed on Tumbling at their club, before expanding their program to include other competitive forms of the sport, such as Double Mini and Individual Trampoline.

In the second staging of a National Clubs event for Aerobic Gymnastics here in Bendigo, the team from Sydney West Gymsports took out the title of Overall Champion Club for 2017.  Brisbane’s Premier Gymnastics Academy finished second Overall, whilst local club, Palmer’s Gym Bendigo, were third.

Finally in Acrobatic Gymnastics, it was the troupe from Sydney Gymnastics Centre who were crowned Overall Champions in 2017, followed by fellow Sydney clubs, SXL Gymnastics in second, and Acrogym in third.

In the Gymnastics for All TeamGym competition, Overall Champion Club is not an award that is presented, however it was great to see the team from Sydney’s Engadine Gymnastics Club once again receiving a gold award for their performance, to add to the gold the same team received at the inaugural event in 2016.

With 2017 being the final year of a three-year contract with the City of Greater Bendigo to host the National Clubs Carnival in the regional Victorian town, Gymnastics Australia will announce the location and dates for the 2018 event at the end of October.

In the meantime, Gymnastics Australia wishes to say a massive THANK YOU to all of the athletes, coaches, clubs and spectators who travelled to Bendigo once again in 2017, to make this year’s National Clubs Carnival the biggest and best yet!

An equally big shout out must also go to all of our fabulous judges, event staff, partners and volunteers – especially the big contingent from Palmer’s Gym Bendigo…without you the event simply could not have gone ahead!
