Gymnastics Australia statement regarding the 2020 Australian Championships

Gymnastics Australia wishes to advise, that in light of recent restrictions enforced by the state and federal governments regarding the outbreak of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), we have made the unfortunate but necessary decision to cancel the Australian Championships for 2020.

The decision includes both the Acrobatic Australian Championships in Sydney on 1-3 May 2020 and the Australian Championships in Melbourne from 18-30 May 2020.

Gymnastics Australia Chief Executive Officer Kitty Chiller AM said the GA Board decision was made with the health and wellbeing of the gymnastics community as the number one priority.

“These are unprecedented times for the world. We are saddened to have to make this decision, but we have done so after listening to the credible evidence presented to us,” said Chiller.
“We acknowledge this will be incredibly disappointing for our community, many of whom have been training for these events for close to 12 months, however we cannot take any risks with the information as we know it today.”

Gymnastics Australia Chief Medical Officer – Dr Kathy Yu also supports the decision.

“This decision has been made as more and more cases of COVID-19 are reported across Australia. As a sport that includes gymnasts, coaches, judges, families and spectators it is imperative that we comply with the advice being provided by the medical profession and with current public health policy to benefit the entire community,” said Dr Yu.

We will continue to monitor the advice and guidance provided by World Health Organisation, government health authorities and the Australian Institute of Sport and will provide further updates on future events in due course.

We encourage everyone to remain vigilant, calm and observe all health and hygiene guidelines.
