Gymnastics Australia Athlete Categorisation Framework 2021-2024

As advised in December of 2020, the Australian Sports Commission Board approved an updated National Athlete Categorisation Framework (NACF). This Framework was also endorsed by the National Institute Network (NIN).

The NACF is used by the NIN and National Sporting Organisations to inform planning and prioritise support to Australian athletes to consistently win medals at major international events, in line with the National High Performance Sports Strategy.

The NACF was developed to provide a consistent basis, both within and across sports to:
- Identify the athletes with the greatest potential to contribute to Australia consistently winning medals at major international events;
- Inform the prioritisation of support to these athletes; and
- Track their performance over time.

Gymnastics Australia as a part of the National High Performance System was required to develop a sport-specific matrix, in collaboration with the AIS Performance Pathways Team which defines each of the five categorisation levels.

Gymnastics Australia has worked closely with the AIS Performance Pathways Team to develop, and agree upon, a sport specific categorisation matrix for each of the Olympic Gymsports.

These matrices have recently been shared for feedback with various stakeholders and have now been confirmed.

Over the coming weeks, Gymnastics Australia will be applying the new criteria and in turn announcing categorised athletes for the next 12 months.

Once our new Athlete Categorisation Matrix has implemented, all High Performance athlete support will be increasingly aligned to an athlete’s categorisation level.
