Sports Science & Medicine
INTRODUCTION
Gymnastics Australia has established a Sports Science/Sports Medical (SSSM) Committee with a view of establishing a closer relationship between coaches/athletes and sports science/sport medicine. It is of particular importance in a sport such as gymnastics where sports science plays a vital role in the training and performance of the athlete.
OBJECTIVES
- Establish and maintain a network of Sports Science and Sports Medical Service providers to service the needs of the National Team and Squads of all gymsports.
- Monitor international advances in training and competition techniques
- Identify and support research that may improve the performance and maintain the health of our athletes
- Continue to improve the performance monitoring systems for tracking elite and potentially elite athletes
Sport Science Sport Medicine Committee Guidelines
SSSM COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Dr Don McIntosh (Co-Chairperson) - has been involved with GA's medical commission since the 1980s. Don coordinated medical services for the 2000 Olympics, 2005 Melbourne World Championships and 2006 Commonwealth Games Gymnastics competitions and is a member of the FIG medical commission.
Dr Kathy Yu (Co-Chairperson) - has been involved with gymnastics as a competitor, coach and parent. She is the medical officer for the Victorian Men’s team, the consulting medical officer for the National Institute of Circus Arts and works in a Sports Medicine centre in central Melbourne.
Dr Elizabeth Bradshaw - an eminent researcher and educator from Australian Catholic University who has a research interest in gymnastics. Liz has a PhD in biomechanics and motor control along with human movement and teaching degrees.
Phil Cossens - physiotherapist, is an ex gymnast, gymnastics coach and physio to the Australian MAG team.
Keren Faulkner - physiotherapist, has been physio to the Australian WAG team since 2003.
Fiona Sutherland - sports dietitian. Fiona specialises in Eating Disorders and Eating Behaviour. Fiona has many years experience in a wide variety of settings from private Eating Disorders Clinics to major sporting clubs.
Matt Burgin - sports psychologist working with the Western Australian Institute of Sport
Adam Sachs - High Performance Manager GA
Peggy Liddick - Women's National Coach
John Curtin - Men's National Coach
Jo Richards - Women's National Junior Development Coordinator

2010 SPORTS SCIENCE & SPORTS MEDICINE CONFERENCE

The 2010 Sports Science and Sports Medicine Conference was held at Hisense Arena, Melbourne, on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th April. The two day course was held within the competition program of the 2010 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships.
The focus of the conference was on "maximising sporting performance through science and medicine" with examples and practical workshops relating to the sport of gymnastics.
The liturature below details some of the content presented during the course of the two day's.
