Jill Wright appointed AM for her services to the sport

The Australia Day celebrations continue for Gymnastics Australia with Jill Wright’s appointment as a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia (General Division) for her service to the sport.

Jill Wright AM has been recognised for her significant service to gymnastics as a national selector, administrator and international judge.

“I found out three months ago and the initial feeling was just surprised.

“So when the announcement was made, I just felt happy and proud to be able to represent the sport and just be able to promote gymnastics,” Mrs Wright said of the appointment.

Since 1978, Mrs Wright has judged at every Australian and Victorian Gymnastics Championship. She has traveled across the world for multiple Olympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games.

In 1996, Mrs Wright was the recipient for the Award of Service with Gymnastics Victoria. She was also the recipient in 2003 for the Award of Merit with Gymnastics Australia and then following on in 2012 she became a life member at Gymnastics Australia.

Mrs Wright was working as Physical Education teacher from 1978-2009, meaning much of her work to gymnastics was voluntary and a true demonstration of her dedication over the years.

“I have always been so well supported by Gymnastics Australia and Gymnastics Victoria. So I am very appreciative of their time.

“It’s difficult to put into words but to get the recognition has been very overwhelming.”

Mrs Wright has always had a strong philosophy of ensuring kids are being active and this has been her pathway and means of promoting gymnastics.

“Gymnastics is such a great way for kids to begin because it’s good for body posture and their self-esteem.

“So to be able to encourage and promote gymnastics as an all-around starting point for kids is something that I will continue to do.”

Kitty Chiller who was also appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia on January 26 is proud that Mrs Wright has been honored.

“Jill has been a tireless contributor to gymnastics in Australia for many decades and at many levels.

“As an experienced judge and highly regarded technical member Jill has helped drive the development of technical, educational and strategic activities.

“Jill is a highly valued member of the gymnastics community and GA is extremely proud that she has been recognised with this very well deserved Honour.” Chiller said.
