On behalf of the Australian gymnastics community, our thoughts and condolences are with all those who have been affected by the devastating fires that we have seen this summer.

Gymnastics clubs are very much a part of many rural and regional communities and we will ensure we support those affected clubs and members in any way we can. We also acknowledge and thank the tireless efforts of all those who are fighting the fires and supporting the affected communities.

Gymnastics Australia, member States and Territories and the Melbourne home of Gymnastics competitions, the Melbourne and Olympic Parks (MOPT) precinct have joined together to support the bushfire relief fund through a campaign at the upcoming Individual Apparatus World Cup Melbourne, to be held at Melbourne Arena from 20 - 23 February.

The best men’s and women’s artistic gymnasts in the world will be at this event, with vital Tokyo Olympic qualifying points on offer.

For every landing that these gymnasts ‘stick’ at the event finals, Gymnastics Australia will donate $100. The total figure earned will be matched by our State and Territory members and MOPT.

Gymnastics Australia President Sam McKay and the entire Gymnastics Australia Board fully support this initiative.

“This is a devastating time for so many Australians and every little bit of assistance from all quarters will help. Gymnastics clubs are at the heart of many communities right around the country, so we want to show our support for those areas and people that have been affected.

“The World Cup campaign is a good opportunity to start the support and I thank state and territory member associations and our venue partner for joining us in this initiative.

“Several Gymnastics clubs and member families have been affected with facilities and equipment having been lost. Through other localised initiatives, we will do all that we can for our Gymnastics community also, to assist them on the road to recovery,” Mr McKay said.

Gymnastics Australia CEO Kitty Chiller says that GA will continue to look for other ways to support the appeal:

“We are working closely with our state associations in Victoria and New South Wales to assist our affected clubs, members and technical members through member fee relief and any other assistance with facilities or equipment that may be needed.

“All funds raised by these joint initiatives will be donated to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal,” Ms Chiller said.
