Gymnastics Australia supports postponement of Tokyo Olympics

Gymnastics Australia (GA), like the rest of the world, learnt the news that the Tokyo Olympic Games, due to begin in July this year, will likely be postponed to 2021.

Whilst we acknowledge how disappointing this news is for our athletes, all of whom have worked so hard over the last four years to be able to represent their country, GA supports the decision made by the IOC and AOC to put the health and wellbeing of our athletes and their families as the number one priority.

We respect how hard our athletes have trained and how much they would have been looking forward to competing on the world’s stage against the world’s best. However, in the environment we are currently living in, we believe their ability to compete on a fair and level playing field would have been compromised had the Games proceeded.

We acknowledge our coaches and program managers who have worked tirelessly to get our athletes into the positions they are in today. Whilst they may not have been competing, for most of them the Olympics would have been the pinnacle of their careers as well.

We are living in unprecedented times and this a unprecedented call the IOC has had to make.

We look forward to working with the AOC in the coming months to prepare our athletes as best we can for 2021 and beyond.
