Gymnastics: The Olympics Ratings Champion

With the Rio 2016 Olympic Games now literally just one day away, the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) have released the results of an international survey conducted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the public impact of the 2012 London Olympic Games. Their findings were based on information given by 36,000 respondents in 16 countries and TV audience ratings from 506 channels across the globe.

These results found that Gymnastics was one of the watched sports at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Of 171,482 tickets made available to the public for all Artistic Gymnastic events held at North Greenwich Arena, a remarkable 170,250 (99%) where purchased, and similar figures for Trampoline (98.6%) and Rhythmic Gymnastics (96.8%) were recorded.

Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), the host broadcasting service for London 2012, produced almost 100,000 hours of TV coverage, a 62% rise increase on Beijing 2008, and OBS images were then rebroadcast by 525 TV broadcasters around the globe. FIG has also reported that coverage for digital platforms increased 715% compared with 2008 with a total of 81,541 online transmission hours.

Public opinion was overwhelmingly in favour of the gym sports on show at London 2012, with the leading gymnastic routines and competition atmosphere the topics most highly rated.

This information released by FIG will hopefully highlight the popularity and passion the general public have for the sport of Gymnastics, and we hope to see Channel 7 reflect this by showcasing this fantastic sport during Rio 2016!
