White Balloon Day 2018

What is White Balloon Day?

Bravehearts’ White Balloon Day is an annual campaign dedicated to raising awareness of the prevention of child sexual assault.

Now in its 22nd year, White Balloon Day has helped educate the community about preventing this crime, whilst also helping to raise essential funds for Bravehearts’ counselling and education programs.

You and your Club can help protect our children by getting involved in White Balloon Day, and adding your voice to the thousands of people who will be breaking the silence on child sexual assault on Friday 7 September, 2018.

Learn more below about how your Club can get involved!

Why support White Balloon Day?

Gymnastics Australia formally established a Partnership with Bravehearts in May 2018.  With dual Olympian, Larrissa Miller, having been an Ambassador for Bravehearts – Australia’s leading child protection organisation – for several years, after numerous fundraising campaigns in aid of the organisation, and with the launch of Gymnastics Australia’s National Child Safety Commitment Statement in early 2018, the two organisations decided to formalise their Partnership.

As a result of the Partnership with Bravehearts, Gymnastics Australia, is better placed to raise awareness and empower over 220,000 Australian children in regard to child safety, and can now provide training to club administrators, coaches and judges, enabling Gymnastics Australia to play a crucial role in helping protect the most vulnerable members of the community – our children.

How can my Club get involved?

White Balloon Day occurs during National Child Protection Week, which kicks off on Fathers’ Day (Sunday 2 September) and runs through until September 8.  To involve as many of your Club members as possible, we are suggesting you run White Balloon Day activities throughout the entire National Child Protection Week.

To get involved simply register online it’s easy (and free)!

Bravehearts also have loads of free downloadable resources to help bring your event to life. Choose the relevant resource depending on the age of your athletes and Club members and away you go!

What can my Club do to raise funds and awareness this White Balloon Day?

Here are a few suggestions:
- Get your athletes to wear white to training on White Balloon Day/during National Child Protection Week and make a gold coin donation to the cause when the do so
- Share information about White Balloon Day and what it represents in your Club newsletters and on your Club social media accounts
- Have a ‘bring a friend day’ for a gold coin donation to attend
- Hold a sausage sizzle or morning tea at your Club, where parents and families can make a gold coin donation to attend
- Run a Club colouring in competition or chalk art competition and in doing so encourage parents to talk with their children about what child safety means
