GA Statement: 2021 Australian Gymnastics Championships

10 March 2021

Gymnastics Australia can confirm today that it will host the 2021 Australian Gymnastics Championships on the Gold Coast from 13-25 May.

The premier gymnastics event in Australia sees the top gymnasts from around the nation compete for the title of Australian Champion in six competitive GymSports, while also acting as the Oceania Championships, an Olympic qualifying event, and providing our athletes already qualified for Tokyo with much needed competition before the Games.

Gymnastics Australia, CEO, Kitty Chiller AM said it was important for the organisation to give the gymnastics community an opportunity to get back on to the competition floor after not having any national domestic events for close to 18 months.

“We are excited to stage this event and we are committed to providing an opportunity for our community to come together after a disappointing 2020. The primary factor driving this decision is our athletes and providing them with a stage on which to perform and compete at their best,” said Chiller.

“We recognise however that we live in very uncertain times and that there are many challenges that we may still face to host this event, so we must acknowledge that the event may not look as it has in previous years. However, we want our community to know that we are committed to delivering this event safely.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and take the advice of health and government experts and other credible evidence at all times. The health and safety of all event attendees, and mitigating any risks that may present, will remain front of mind in our event planning and decision making”, said Chiller.

Acknowledging the environment of uncertainty, Gymnastics Australia will commit to a full refund of all entry fees and ticket sales should the event be cancelled prior to commencement.

“We are working closely with the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre to ensure this special event is delivered in a COVID safe environment. We want to thank the venue, along with Major Events Gold Coast and Tourism Events Queensland for their ongoing support and commitment to gymnastics,” said Chiller.

A draft schedule for the event has been released and can be found here. All information and updates regarding this event will be made available on our website and on our social media channels. We have also developed an FAQ document, found here, that will be updated as relevant.
