Gymnastics Australia statement regarding National Clubs Carnival

23 July 2021

With the current challenges that continue to be felt across the country due to the ever-evolving nature of COVID-19, Gymnastics Australia has made the incredibly difficult decision to cancel the 2021 National Clubs Gymnastics Carnival.

The decision includes both Part 1 and Part 2 of the Carnival, set to take place in September and October respectively at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre.

Gymnastics Australia Chief Executive Officer, Kitty Chiller AM, said the decision was made with a heavy heart but that the health, safety, and wellbeing of the gymnastics community was the number one priority.

“We are extremely disappointed to still be in the position where we have to cancel an event, and especially an event that we know our community look forward to so much each year. However, we cannot take any risks with member safety,” said Chiller.

“With much of the country in various stages of lockdowns and travel restrictions in place, it would be unfeasible to expect that the Carnival could go ahead in a safe environment.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of our event partners Tourism and Events Queensland and Major Events Gold Coast for supporting our decision. We look forward to working with both organisations over the coming years to make our events event better than ever.”

In recognition that our members want and need something to look forward to, Gymnastics Australia is excited to announce that we will be delivering a virtual National Clubs Carnival for all GymSports later this year.

This participation focussed event will provide a platform to recognise and celebrate each individual gymnasts’ hard work and resilience over the past 18 months, while also showcasing what gymnastics has to offer.

Further details will be made available in the coming weeks.
